The Project

The present office of the Federal Foreign Minister at Am Werderschen Markt is one of the most historic buildings in Berlin. Built from 1934 to 1940 to serve as an extension of the Reichsbank it was occupied in 1949 by the GDR Finance Ministry. In 1954 the Central Committee of the SED (United Socialist Party) took it over and for the next 30 years GDR politic policy was largely determined from this site.

After the German Government had moved from Bonn to Berlin the former Reichsbank building was renovated under strictest safety regulations and an extension was added. With its total surface of 180,000 m² and over 2000 staff members, the Foreign office is presently the largest German ministry.
