  • Drinking water
       More
  • Drinking water – crucial for survival

Above all, drinking water conservation means recognising, reducing and avoiding risks

"Everybody who knows how important, vulnerable and scarce our drinking water has become and doesn’t act accordingly, makes himself accountable."

    Manfred Lodewick

Water is one of our core businesses; from the source to the tap or wherever else it is needed.

  • Drinking Water Ordinance

A clear focus on water quality

Manfred Lodewick launched the drinking water ordinance. All over Germany he discussed and commented on the sector of drinking water with a group of experts.

Water is crucial for the survival of the human race

Even here in our country, where water is abundant and no important hygiene problems exist, clean drinking water is a topic that is constantly discussed.

Even recently contaminated drinking water has led to the death of people in Germany. Most vulnerable are post surgery patients, people suffering from immune deficiency, athletes, and children, the chronically ill and the elderly. If all drinking water regulations were followed during planning, construction and implementation of drinking water systems, the potential risk would be very limited.

The Drinking Water Ordinance 2001 was created to protect the population from potential health hazards.

  • The situation

The worldwide supply of safe drinking water has become one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century.

Three quarters of the earth are covered in water, but only 0.1% of this is readily available freshwater. Currently 1.1 Billion people have no access to clean drinking water. According to WHO estimates, this number will increase to 4 Billion in 2025.

Every year, more than 2 Million people die due to the lack of water or the consequences of contaminated water. Contaminated water is also responsible for 60% of all diseases that kill children each year. That’s 500 children per day and 1.85 Million in one year. Due to leaking pipe systems about 50% of laboriously won drinking water is lost at distribution. The USA alone will need to invest approx 1 Trillion Dollar by 2025 to fix their ailing water infrastructure.

  • The solution

More and more countries that have neither sizeable lakes or rivers nor ground and surface water, make use of sea water desalinisation in order to obtain drinking water. However this procedure has many drawbacks. First, it is very expensive due to the high energy consumption and often requires state subsidies. Secondly, it puts a strain on the environment since the saline waste is put back into the sea.

One economical solution is the repair of leaking water supply mains - this can lead to conceivably realistic savings. Drinking water usage will become more economical if leaking water supply mains are repaired. Nowadays it is also possible to employ technologies like special sanitation appliances in industry and farming that reduce the wasting of resources. Wastewater can be treated and reused - so called grey water - which is used to flush toilets and urinals or to water green spaces and farmland.

The most important measure to be taken to save drinking water is changing our attitude and behaviour. The richer a country, the more water is used per person. Especially the world’s wealthiest nations, due to their abundance in oil and other natural resources, use 5 to 10 times more water per head than industrial nations in Western Europe, for example. To counteract this trend, many governments organise large campaigns to make the population aware of the importance of preserving our precious drinking water.

  • Water projects

In March 2010, Lodewick GmbH received an invitation to introduce their products and services from the Sanctuaries Division of the Ministry of Saudi Arabia.

Lodewick was requested to present a proposal for the water supply and waste water disposal of a stadium to be built for pilgrims coming to do their ablutions. This new project will provide equipment for 16,000 toilets and 20,000 washrooms. During peak visiting periods, e.g. Ramadan, some 45,000 m³ of waste water will be produced.

    The RFP contained following requirements:

    a) water saving / water usage is of highest priority

    b) “touch-less” toilets and washroom (sensor based technology) hard-wear systems (very high amount of users).

    c) wastewater treatment for re-usage in toilets and for use as cooling water

    d) Assessing and comparing different wastewater disposal systems like gravity sewers, vacuum systems etc.

    e) General assessment and recommendation for the stadium

The proposal was finalised in April 2010 and has been sent to the ministry.

  • A few examples that show how water is (mis)used

    • - You need 4100 Litres of waters to produce a cotton T-shirt.
    • - 450,000 Litres of water go into the production of a new car. This is due to the high amount of raw material required
    • - 2,400 litres of water are used to make one single beef Hamburger
    • - 8,000 litres of water are hidden in the productions of a pair of shoes.
    • - The same is true for a pair of jeans.

Women in developing countries walk in an average 10-15 kilometres to fetch water. They carry some 20 litres per trip and per person. In some parts of Africa, women and children spend 8 hours a day collecting water.

  • Iron Rule

We have an “iron rule” in our company: Complaints and service inquiries are as important as work orders!

“Around the clock service” is not just a catch phrase - our customer service is well organised and always accessible at all our sites in Germany.

    Please note:

We don’t provide just any service. Our team is highly skilled and qualified and provides professional solutions. That is how we make a difference.

Lodewick GmbH has been in operation nationwide for over 30 years. We offer our clients an integrated service.

  • Planning

For the implementation of demanding and feasible systems, “hands-on training” is the best way to achieve it.

At the planning stage, our engineers, technicians and designers rely on their well founded experience. They also make use of the latest communication technology and CAD-programs.

We design individual and cost effective technology of highest standard.

Our site managers make use of excellent revision documents which facilitate future maintenance services:

Once all work is completed, our clients receive a complete set of documents detailing the type and positioning of each part of the installation. That way, every step can be retrieved at any time.

Our company owner is personally liable for the prompt handover of complete revision documents!

  • Design

What is technically perfect should also convince optically – the high standard should be evident in the technical design.

A typical Lodewick design is not only functional but pleasing to the eye as a whole and in its every detail.

An extraordinary overall concept and a careful technical implementation turn “systems” into beautiful “exhibits”.

  • Environment
    and
    Alternatives

We view ourselves as your energy partner and for Lodewick this means we think and act with environmental awareness.

The future belongs to alternative energy! Even today we can use it with great cost effectiveness.

The water in Lodewick’s office building is heated by photovoltaic energy. In the Kamenz Hospital, we’ve implemented a future orientated energy concept in cooperation with the Technical University Dresden: fuel cells, absorption cooling systems, thermal and photovoltaic systems.

These installations in the Kamenz Hospital set new standards. All state of the art alternative energy supplies or generators are installed there.

However: the professional integration with the heating or cooling cycle requires exceptional skill and knowhow at the planning and installation stage. Our know-how and experience in this sector have been demonstrated in many projects.

  • Water
    treatment

Even “normal” water treatment, filtering units and pipe supplies for swimming pools can be a demanding specialist area for which we have experts at the ready. It’s their daily work but never just their daily routine.

The Hannover Zoo presented our team a very special assignment:
The water treatment plant in the Hippo House. The highly technical system, the myriad pipes, the appliances ...everything had to be fitted for extreme demands.

We met the challenge with lots of enthusiasm and created a masterpiece. The water treatment for over hundreds of tons of hippos works perfectly.

The Hannover Zoo has greatly benefited from this economical concept. And it looks so amazing that it has completely satisfied the high expectations of the management.

  • Cooling systems

Since 2007, due to its development as a full-scale building service company, Lodewick GmbH has been listed in the Registry of Craftsman. We deliver a complete service package for cooling systems, regardless of it being a new project or the optimisation of an existing cooling system – we deliver with the same high standard that our clients are accustomed to – from planning to maintenance and service.

  • We are the future – we are the people

The Think Tank is a department set up by Manfred Lodewick to help people to think outside the box.

The main purpose of the Think Tank is to find a new approach to problems that can be useful for people all over the world – solutions that as yet have not been found.

Its purpose is to stimulate the IMAGINATION, to get ideas and thus solutions for all sorts of problems for businesses in the energy and environmental sectors. Lodewick’s Think Tank is especially for people who like to learn, to focus on problem solutions and who can put ideas into feasible strategies.

Its people work together on establishing goals and the measures for their implementation, - the future in the making. The Think Tank is used by staff members as well as external participants. Their activity is not restricted to regional problems but they also tackle international subjects.

Canada, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are all benefiting from this initiative.

    The result:

    New visions
    Increased consciousness for the future
    Trust in your own strengths
    Diminishing fear of the future
    New contacts
    New products and services

Lodewick – a medium sized business on the way to becoming a Global Player

    Drinking water und alternative Energien

On 22nd of October 2007, Sigmar Gabriel, the German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety, convinced himself of the cost effective performance and innovative capacity of the Lodewick business in Herzberg, Germany.

During this visit, Manfred Lodewick and his sons brought attention to the changed standards regarding the drinking water regulations and the required action. Then they discussed how to improve funding in geothermal energy and solar technology. Manfred Lodewick stressed hereby the important relationship between medium sized businesses and politic leaders, resulting in higher recognition of German key qualifications in the global market.

Federal Minister Gabriel showed himself impressed by the Lodewick business, whose development he had already closely followed during his time as Prime Minister of Lower Saxony. Part of the attentive audience was also the Head of Regional District Bernhard Reuter, Dieter Finke-Groene, Ministralrat of the Ministry of Lower Saxony and CEO Christian Lux from the Chamber of Foreign Trade in Canada.
